Sunscreen can help ward off severe sunburns.

Many of us get sunburned from time to time, but some people are exceptionally sensitive to sunlight. Sun poisoning is a severe sunburn that often causes red, itchy bumps on the skin. Some people also develop rashes, blisters and a headache, along with chills and nausea. If you experience these additional symptoms, call your doctor. You may need professional medical care if you have had a severe reaction to sunlight. Otherwise, some home care remedies like cold compresses and aloe vera gel can help treat your skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, to help alleviate the swelling and the pain.

    • 2

Dip a washcloth in cold water, wring out the excess water and apply it to your skin. This can help relieve the burning sensation.

    • 3

Soak in a cool bath if you have sun poisoning on a large area of skin. Pat your skin dry gently with a soft towel to avoid abrading it.

    • 4

Massage aloe vera gel gently into your skin to help soothe it and relieve the pain.

    • 5

Apply a hydrocortisone cream to any rashes that have developed on your skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid picking at any blisters that form on your skin. Apply a loose gauze bandage if you have trouble leaving them alone.

  • Some antibiotics or herbal supplements, such as St. John's wort, can increase your sensitivity to sunlight.
