How to Crochet a Beer Koozie
Beer koozies let you comfortably hold cold bottles in your hand while drinking. They are also useful for collecting the moisture that is created by condensation on the outside of chilled bottles, preventing unwanted drips and water rings. You can crochet your own beer koozies using a few simple crochet stitches. Choose fun or sophisticated yarns depending on where you will be using your koozies. You can even choose to decorate the koozies with embroidery or appliqué after you have finished crocheting them.

Crochet Stitches Used

1
Make the chain stitch by creating a slipknot and placing the loop on your crochet hook. Bring the yarn over the hook so that it runs from back to front. Grab the yarn with the tip of hook. Pull it through the loop already on the hook while dropping the loop off. A single new loop should be on your hook.
-
2
Make the single crochet stitch by inserting your hook into the V-shape of the top of a previously worked stitch. There should already be one loop on your hook. Grab the yarn and pull it through the stitch, bringing a new loop up onto your hook. Grab the yarn again and pull it through both loops as you drop them off the hook. One new loop should remain. This stitch is always worked by going from right to left.

Make a reverse single crochet stitch the same way as you would make a regular single crochet stitch. The only difference with the reverse single crochet stitch is that you work from left to right rather than from right to left. The reverse single crochet creates a simple but attractive ridged edge.

Start by making the bottom of the koozie. Use the hook and yarn to make two chain stitches. Make six single crochet stitches in the second chain stitch from the hook. Then work two single crochet stitches in every stitch. You should have a circle of 12 stitches. Place your stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

5
Work two single crochet stitches into the next stitch, then work one single crochet stitch in the following stitch. Repeat this pattern to complete the round. You should have 18 stitches. For the next round, work two single crochet stitches in the first stitch and one single crochet stitch in each of the next two stitches. Repeat this pattern to complete the round. You should have 24 stitches. Work one single crochet stitch into each stitch on the next round to complete the bottom of the koozie. Slip the crocheted circle under your glass bottle. The bottom of the bottle and the circle should be about the same size. Crochet another round of single crochet stitches if the circle is smaller than the bottle's bottom until they are equal in size.

To make the sides of the koozie, work one single crochet stitch in each of the 24 crochet stitches around the bottom of the koozie. However, only insert your hook into the back edges of the stitches when you crochet. This will make the sides stand up independently. Then complete 16 rounds of normal single crochet. Slip the glass bottle into the koozie. The sides should cover a large part of the bottle, so that you can hold the bottle in your hand without touching the glass. Add a few more rounds of single crochet stitches in lengthen the sides if necessary.
-
7
Finish the koozie by making a reverse single crochet stitch into every stitch of the final round. Cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop. Use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends. Your homemade beer koozie is complete. Add embroidery or appliqué designs if you wish to decorate the koozie.
