How to Back-up Photos With an External USB

Digital photos that are stored in a computer can represent previous memories and other important events in a person's life. Due to that importance, it is vital that digital photos be backed-up to a secondary storage location, such as an external USB drive. The two most common types of USB storage are hard drives and flash, or "thumb," drives. You can back-up your photos to a USB storage device with Windows Explorer.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the USB storage device to the computer.

    • 2

Click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

    • 3

      Click "Pictures."

    • 4

Select the photos to be backed-up with the mouse.

    • 5

Press the Ctrl and C keys at the same time.

    • 6

Click the USB storage device in the left column. Typically, it is labelled as "(E:)," though the drive letter may be different depending upon your computer's setup.

    • 7

Press the Ctrl and V keys at the same time to copy the photos to the external storage device. The photos are now backed-up.
