Permits and tests are administered by the Grant County Health District. Food workers must posses a food handler card to work. According to the Washington State Department of Health, a food worker is someone who "works with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or with any surface where people put unwrapped food." To receive a food handler's permit, you must attend a food safety training class and pass an exam.

      Study for the food handler card test using the Washington State Food & Beverage Workers' Manual.

      Select a time to attend the training and take the food handler test at the Moses Lake office. The food handler test is given right after the training. As of April 2011, the times offered are Thursday at 9:00am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, and 5:00pm, with a Spanish class offered at 10:00 on Thursday as well. Due to class size, it is recommended that you arrive early.

      Bring with you a photo ID and $10.00 in cash to pay for the test. If you pass the test, you will be given the food handler card before leaving the office.
