How to Make Window Trim

There are several ways to install window trim, some of which are complicated and difficult, depending upon the type of trim and installation method you choose. For the do-it-yourself homeowner, it's a good idea to keep it simple. A four-sided, miter-cut design is something anyone can do with the right tools (principally, a miter saw). Use pre-finished trim so you don't have to work around the wall and window while finishing it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the upper width of the opening, from one top corner to the other, at the edge of the window casing.

    • 2

Mark the measurement on a length of pre-finished window trim. Mark it with two pencil marks on the bottom edge of the trim and the measured span between them.

    • 3

Lay the trim on your miter saw, with the bottom edge against the back rail and the face up. Move the trim so one of the marks is in front of the blade. Turn the blade to 45 degrees out (pointing away from the middle of the trim). Cut it.

    • 4

Move the trim so the second mark is in front of the blade. Turn the blade in the opposition direction as before, to again point 45 degrees out. Cut it.

    • 5

Hold the trim to the upper edge of the opening, with the bottom of the piece lined up along the edge and the cut ends angling up off each top corner. Nail it in place with a trim nailer, putting nails every foot or so along the upper and lower edges of the trim.

    • 6

Cut and nail in the trim for the remaining three edges of the window in the same way. Fit the ends tightly against each other at the corners, so the 45-degree cuts combine to make 90 degrees.

    • 7

Run beads of caulk around perimeter of the trim, where it meets the wall.
