Costly repairs to your electric range might be avoided if you check these things before you call a repairman.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement Elements
  • Oven Mitts
  • Oven Mitts
  • Oven mitts
  1. Step 1

Make sure the cord is plugged in and that the breaker hasn't tripped.

  2. Step 2

Swap a malfunctioning element for another one in the same-sized slot. It might be burned out. (An appliance shop can also test the element for you.)

  3. Step 3

Clean the contacts inside the receptacle if the element works in another slot. If the receptacle is corroded or burnt, replace it.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the temperature control if dishes are consistently burnt or undercooked. Check your owner's manual for how to do this.

  5. Step 5

Watch the elements when the stovetop is heating. If one area of an element glows brighter than the others, chances are that that element is about to fail. Replace it before the element damages your cookware.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn off the power at the breaker before you work on any large appliance.
  • Let the heating elements cool before touching them.
