How to Make Mummy Costumes

How to Make Mummy Costumes thumbnail
A mummy costume is a fairly easy costume to make.

A mummy is a classic Halloween costume. The horrific aspect of mummies is depicted as swathed, preserved corpses that are able to walk around, similar to zombies. Actual mummies originate from around the world, most famously from Egypt where people were routinely preserved, wrapped in cloth and placed in tombs after they died. You can become the living dead easily with a pair of long johns and some gauze strips. This costume works best if two people work on the costume together, because wrapping the gauze around the body is hard to do alone.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 yards white cloth gauze
  • Tea bags
  • Scissors
  • Flesh-colored face paint
  • Red face paint
  • Yellow face paint
  • Brown face paint
  • Safety pins
  • White long-sleeve shirt (long johns work well)
  • White pants

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the gauze into 2-inch-wide strips if it is not already in strips. Make the strips of varying lengths, but they should be at least 3 to 4 feet long.

    • 2

Fill a bathtub with hot water. Place about eight tea bags into the water and allow the bags to soak into the water for about five minutes. Soak the strips of gauze in the tea water to darken them and make them look aged. You can skip this step in a time crunch.

    • 3

Remove the gauze from the water and allow to air dry completely.

    • 4

Paint your face with a mixture of flesh, brown, red and yellow face paint to make it look as if it is aged and mummified. Make the areas around the eye sockets dark with brown paint. Color the rest of the face a mottled brownish-yellow color to make it look old and wrinkled.

    • 5

Wrap your head in several of the gauze strips. Pin them in place around your head with safety pins.

    • 6

Put on the white shirt, shoes and pants. Wrap the rest of the gauze strips around your legs, torso and arms. This works best if you have a friend wrap you in the gauze strips. Do not make the strips so tight that you cannot move your arms or sit down comfortably.
