How to Block a Website From Your Computer With Vista

To block a website, you can use Windows Vista's Parental Controls feature. When a user who is subject to Parental Controls tries to access a blocked website, he will receive a message that the page has been blocked. You can apply the website blocking features of Parental Controls only to a Standard account in Windows Vista, not to an Administrator-level account.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button, then select "Control Panel." Select "User Accounts and Family Safety." Select "Add or remove user accounts."

    • 2

Select the primary Administrator account in the "Manage Accounts" window. Click "Create a password." Type and confirm a password that the other users can't easily guess. You can type a hint to remind you in case you should forget your password. However, take care to type a hint that isn't obvious to other users. Click "Create password." Repeat this step for each Administrator account on the computer.

    • 3

Click "Manage Accounts" in the address bar. Create a new account if necessary by clicking "Create a new account." Type a name for the account in the "New account name field," and select "Standard user" as the account type. Click "Create account."

    • 4

Click "Set up Parental Controls." Select the Standard account on which you'd like to block a website. Under "Parental Controls," select "On, enforce current settings."

    • 5

Select "Windows Vista Web Filter" under "Windows Settings." Select "Block some websites or content," then click "Edit the Allow and Block list." Under "Website address," type the URL of the website, then click "Block." Add any more websites you'd like to block, then click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer, you can select "Only allow websites that are on the allow list." This setting completely blocks all websites except the ones that you allow. To allow Web browsing, you must type each permitted website one at a time into the "Website address" field and click "Allow" to unblock it.

  • Parental Controls is available in Windows Vista Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate. The feature is absent in Vista Business edition.

  • You can also block a website from saving cookies, downloading files or running programs. To do this, click the "Start" button, "Control Panel" and "Network and Internet." Click "Internet Options," then click the "Privacy" tab. Click "Sites," type the URL under "Address of website" and click "Block," then click "OK." Click "Security" and select "Restricted Sites." Ensure that the security level for the zone is set to "High." Click "Sites," type the website address in the field and click "Add." Click "Close," then click "OK."

  • Set a strong user password to prevent the Standard user from bypassing the controls by logging in to the Administrator account.
