How to Publish Content on Apple iBooks

E-books are quickly becoming a popular choice for readers. Apple's iPad, which links directly to the Apple bookstore, allows you as an author to take control of your publishing career and publish your work for Apple's iPad users. Publishing your books in Apple's iPad bookstore isn't difficult and can make your books available to a whole new population of readers.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an ISBN, which identifies you as the publisher of your book and is required by Apple. You can purchase ISBNs in groups of ten through the Bowker Agency, the only legitimate place to buy ISBNs in the United States (see Resources).

    • 2

Format your book appropriately (see Resources). There are no uniform rules about what fonts, font size, margins or spacing you should use, but you should keep the number of fonts to a minimum. Ideally, font size should be between 12 and 14 points. Use "set first line" indents for your paragraphs, and make sure there are two spaces between each page break to help avoid pages running together after the formatting for ePub is completed.

    • 3

Save your manuscript as ePub. Some word processors now offer the ePub format as a save option, and there are numerous programs available that will save your file as an ePub file (see Resources).

    • 4

Locate an Apple aggregator for the iBook store since, at this time, you can't publish directly. You can create an Apple account to get a full list of approved aggregators that will get your book in the iPad bookstore, but many of them charge up-front fees. Smashwords is free. With Smashwords, you can upload a Word file that will be converted to the ePub format automatically, and then request inclusion in the Apple iPad bookstore catalog.

Tips & Warnings

  • You cannot resell ISBN numbers, so be careful if someone offers to sell you one.
