How to Be a Modern Lady

A modern lady is confident and collected.

Dazzling dresses, luxurious lifestyles and handsome men are all things that come to mind when someone utters the word "lady," but a modern lady has much more to offer the world than simply good looks and class. Today's modern woman juggles not only personal relationships and families, but often a career as well. A modern lady is one who not only handles her relationships and commitments with flair and sophistication, but is also a woman who exhibits confidence, self-awareness and grace in everything that she does.

Instructions

1. Treat others kindly and politely. Whether the person you're dealing with is the epitome of sweetness or someone you'd rather forget, treat her with gentleness. Your mother probably admonished you as a child to treat others the way you would like to be treated, and this holds true even as an adult. Kindness goes a long way in establishing a reputation as a lady. Kindness doesn't have to be dramatic and can be as little as greeting someone with a smile or holding the door for a stranger.

2. Expand your horizons. Learn about other cultures, races, religions and countries. While you don't necessarily need to be well-traveled, you should be aware that not all of the world lives as Americans do. Read books, study international websites, take a culture class or talk with friends about their experiences growing up in different places.

3. Be self-confident. While everyone has moments of insecurity, a lady should be incredibly self-confident in her body, her career, her relationships and herself. You don't need to look like a model to feel good about yourself, so find ways to improve your self esteem if you feel weak. Take a dance class, go on a run, try a new hairstyle or even buy a new outfit. Take steps to make yourself shine and show others the self confidence within.

4. Demonstrate discreet behavior. Whether you're dating a new guy or spending a night on the town with your girlfriends, behave in a manner that is becoming for a modern lady. Remember that even if you're just out drinking with friends, that any pictures taken will likely be posted on social networking websites for all of eternity. Don't do anything in public that you wouldn't want your boss or your grandmother to see.
