How to Design Your Own Lesson Plan Template

Templates make planning lessons much easier.

Creating a lesson plan template saves time in creating daily, weekly or quarterly lessons plans. Lesson plans can be as intricate or simple as you want, but there is specific information that should to be included on every template. Templates can be created in any word processing program to be saved for later use. You can choose to include the headers in text boxes and arrange them in a special design on the document, or you can simply type the section headers in bold and leave spaces in between. Just make sure to bold or highlight your headers so you can easily reference your lesson plan.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a blank document in your word processor program. Open the "File" menu and save the document as a "Template" so you can access this template for all of your lesson plans.

    • 2

Format your template with section headers for each piece of information required for lesson planning. Create the headers by going to the "Insert" menu and creating a text box. Use a new text box for each of your headers. Choose your own text and size, but make it bold for easy identification. Stack the headers in order of importance, leaving adequate room in the header text boxes for the actual lesson information.

    • 3

Label the template with the headers "Name," "Class" and "Year," all in the same text box and put them at the top of the page, single-spaced. Stack a new text box below the name, class and year and type the header "Objectives" in bold. Provide space for up to five objectives for the lesson by numbering one through five, double spacing between the numbers in the text box.

    • 4

Include after the objectives a text box with the heading "Timing and Materials" and two blank spaces in the text box. This provides space for writing how long the lesson will take and what you will need to complete it.

    • 5

Create a text box, type "Introduction" in bold and leave space in the text box for information, such as daily announcements, topic overview and side notes on the topic.

    • 6

Create a text box with the header "Step-by-Step Procedure" in bold. Leave space in the text box for up to 10 steps for accomplishing the lesson.

    • 7

Add in bold a text box for the "Lesson Assessment and Adaptations." Provide space in the text box to list at least two types of assessment for the lesson and at least one adaptation to the lesson.

    • 8

Finish your template with a text box for "Reflection," leaving two spaces for a response. Re-save the final draft and you have a finished template for future reference.
