How to Take a Third Root on the TI-84 Plus

On the TI-84 Plus, the square root function is presented in blue script over the "x^2" key, but the function for finding a value's third root is nowhere to be found. This doesn't mean that the calculation cannot be accomplished, but that you think of roots in a different way. The root of a number is also a number raised to the inverse of that root. Through this inversion and the carat "^" key, you can calculate the third root, also known as the cube root, with your TI-84 Plus.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter a number with the digits on the keypad. For this example, let the number be 125, so press "1," "2" and "5."

    • 2

Press the "^" key located under the "Clear" on the right-hand side of the keypad.

    • 3

Press the "(" or left parentheses key located above the number keys.

    • 4

Enter "1÷3" by pressing the "1" key, then press the division key "÷" and then the "3" key.

    • 5

Press the ")" or right parentheses key next to the left one, then press "Enter." The cube root will be displayed on the screen. For this example, "5" will appear.
