How to Add File Associations to SharePoint

Save

Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) offers users web portal functions on their Windows servers. WSS supports document workspaces that can store and display information in different file formats. A SharePoint server allows you to share files and content databases with other users. Every file has an attached icon associated with its type. It helps locate the files you need easier. By adding the file icons associated with file types, you provide users with faster access to the documents available on the SharePoint server.

  • Click "Start" in Windows and then click "Microsoft SharePoint Services."

  • Navigate to the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\Template\Images" folder by using left pane menu.

  • Copy a 16-by-16-inch picture file in the GIF, JPG or PNG format to the "Images" folder to add an icon you want to associate with your file type.

  • Click "Start" and then click "Notepad" to open Windows Notepad editor. Click "File" and then click "Open."

  • Navigate to the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\Template\XML" folder and double-click on the "DocIcon.xml" file.

  • Add the "<Mapping Key="pdf" Value="iconpdf.gif"/>" line at the end of the file.

  • Click "File," choose "Save" and then click "OK" to add the icon associated with the PDF files.
