Dell Computer: How to Tell if Your Computer Has a DVD Burner

A Dell desktop or laptop computer manufactured in the last few years is equipped with an integrated DVD burner. If you have a Dell that was manufactured before 2007, the system might contain a CD burner only. There are ways to determine whether the Dell computer has a DVD burner. The optical drive typically will be labeled or you can search for the drive type in Windows Explorer.

  • Look at the front of the optical drive. Dell DVD burners are labeled "DVD-RW," "DVD+RW" or "DVD-R." If the drive is not labeled, go to the next step.

  • Turn on the computer. Right-click on "My Computer" or "Computer" on the desktop or in the desktop "Start" menu.

  • Select "Properties" and choose the "Hardware" tab in Windows XP. There is no need to choose the "Hardware" tab in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

  • Click on the "Device Manager" and look for the drive type under "DVD/CD-ROM drives" or a similar label.
