How to Organize a Closet With Dresses That Should Hang

Save

Whether you are a fashionista with a closet full of dresses or just have a few for every occasion, closet organization for your dresses is vital in order to keep them intact. In addition to organizing your closet space, clean out your closet of any clothes that have not been worn in the past year and give them away to charity or discard of them. After you have cleared out your closet of the unwanted items, you can begin organizing your closet to accommodate hanging dresses.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Hanging rods
  • Hangers
  • Garment bags
  • Clear out the dresses that you no longer wear or those that you need to place in storage or give away. Then, separate dresses according to style and season. For instance, there should be a formal group for dresses as well as a summer, work, casual and evening group.

  • Place all of your dresses together and measure the linear footage to determine how much space you need in your closet for your dresses. If you have 2 feet of dresses, you will need to set aside 2 feet of rod space; if you have 10 feet of dresses, you will need to set aside 10 feet of rod space.

  • Measure the height of your dresses to determine the location the rods will be installed. As a standard, dresses of medium length typically hang between 34 and 40 inches from the floor while longer dresses typically hang between 52 and 60 inches from the floor.

  • Install the hanging rods according to the packaged instructions to create your layout for your dresses.

  • Fold sweater dresses and place them on the shelves inside your closet.

  • Hang halter dresses with hangers that have clips. Do not place the halter portion of the dress over the hanger as it will damage the dress due to the weight of the dress resting on this one area.

  • Cover formal gowns with garment bags and hang on the end of the hanging rod.

  • Hang all of the dresses in the closet and subcategorize them as you hang each group. For instance, within each group you can organize the dresses according to color.
