How to Take Music Off of a CD

Taking music off of a CD is a task that you can complete on any computer. This process is similar on both PC and Macintosh computers. Once erased, you can write new music to the CD. However, only a CD-RW, or CD rewritable disc, can be erased. Other CD formats cannot be erased.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with CD burner

PC

  • Place the CD with the music you want to take off into your CD burner.

  • Click "Start" then open "Computer."

  • Click the "CD Burner" icon.

  • Choose "Erase this disc" from the toolbar and follow the steps provided in the wizard that appears. When complete, the music will be erased from the CD.

Macintosh

  • Place the CD with the music you want to take off into your CD burner.

  • Click "Finder," then open "Applications."

  • Open the "Utilities" folder.

  • Double-click "Disc Utility."

  • Open the "Erase" tab of the Disc Utility.

  • Highlight the CD you want to take music off of.

  • Click the "Erase" button and the music will be erased from the CD.
