The Ethiopian passport is a travel document provided to citizens of Ethiopia who want to travel internationally. If you are an Ethiopian citizen with an expired Ethiopian passport in the United States, you will need to have your passport renewed if you want to visit other countries or travel back to Ethiopia. Renew your Ethiopian passport before traveling to other countries to avoid hassles with immigration officers.

Visit the official homepage of the Embassy of Ethiopia and download the Ethiopian passport application form. Please see Resources for the link. Read and fill out the form completely then make two copies.

Go to a photography studio and have four colored passport size photographs taken. The background must be white. Write your name at the back of the photographs before submitting.

Make two copies of any legal document showing your Ethiopian citizenship. These include your birth certificate, Kebele ID or old passport. Note that you will still need to submit your expired passport along with the copies.

Make two copies of your U.S. Permanent resident card (front and back), I- 94 form, or other document showing your current immigration status in the United States.

Download the finger print capturing document from the Embassy of Ethiopia website. Please see Resources for the link and take it to your local police station to get your fingerprints taken. Make one copy of the finger print form after you are done. Individuals under the age of 14 are exempt from providing finger prints.

Enclose a money order, certified bank check or cashiers check payable to “Embassy of Ethiopia.” Write down your name, address and contact number at the back of the check. The Ethiopian Embassy does not accept personal checks, cash or credit card payments at this time.

Put your old passport, completed passport application form, completed finger print capturing document, money order and the copies you made in a self addressed return envelope with sufficient prepaid postage and mail it to: Embassy of Ethiopia 3506 International Dr. NW Washington DC, 20008

Tip

  • Ensure that you submit the required number of copies or the Ethiopian embassy will not process your request and mail the documents back to you.
