How to Turn on the Touchpad on Windows 7

Save

The touchpad is a central feature of the laptop computer. You can turn it off when using an external mouse and then turn it back on by accessing the mouse properties. The Windows 7 operating system eliminated the "Hardware and Sound" category in the Control Panel, replacing it with an Ease of Access Center where you can access the mouse properties. Make sure that all mouse drivers are updated before turning on the touchpad.

  • Update the touchpad drivers. Go to the computer manufacturer website and download the latest drivers. Restart the computer for the change to take effect.

  • Click "Start" and "Control Panel."

  • Click "Ease of Access" to open the Ease of Access Center. Click "Change how your mouse works."

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the "Make the mouse easier to use" window. Click "Mouse Settings" under "See Also." The Mouse Properties dialog box opens.

  • Click the large touchpad icon in the center of the screen. Click "Device Select and Button Settings."

  • Click the radio button next to "Enable" under "Touchpad." Click the radio button next to "Enable" under "Touchpad Buttons." Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the settings.
