How to Disable Tabbed Browsing in Firefox

Firefox is the world's second most popular browser. It offers its users many features innately or through add-ons. You can turn off tabbed browsing, one of those features, also within Firefox or with an add-on. The add-on is simple. Go to the XUL Apps website, download Tab Killer and install it. Tab Killer only works for Firefox version 3.X. If you have Firefox 4, you will need to disable tabs tabs the old-fashioned way.

  • Open Firefox.

  • Click on "Options" in the "Tools" menu in Windows. On the Mac version, click on "Preferences ... " in the "Firefox" menu.

  • Click on the "Tabs" tab in the subsequent dialogue box.

  • Remove the check for the options of "Open new windows in a new tab instead" and "Always show the tab bar."

  • Close the "Options" dialogue box in Windows by clicking on the "Okay" button. Close the "Preferences" dialogue box in Mac OS X by clicking on the "X" button in the top left corner. You do not have to restart Firefox to begin to work without tabs.
