1
Click the large "+" icon at the top of the window, type in a search query for a subject that interests you and click "Search." A new column appears.
-
2
Scroll down the search results, and click a user name whose tweet, or message, you find interesting. This brings up the user's profile.
-
-
3
Click the "Follow" button at the bottom of the profile to add the user to your "Following" list. That user will now show up in your timeline.
-
4
Hover over any user icon, and click the left-pointing arrow to reply or the right-pointing arrow to retweet, meaning repost the tweet for your followers to see. Type your response in the box at the bottom of the window, and click "Send" to make it public. Users you retweet or respond to will see your message and reply or add you to their friends list.
-
5
Scroll to the left to see the "Twitscoop: Buzzing Right Now" column, which shows you "trending topics" people are talking about on Twitter. Click any search term to bring up recent search results, and then click through to profiles to find new friends and follow them.
-
6
Add two or three relevant "hashtags" to the end of a tweet. A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a pound sign or hash, such as #americanidol, #newyorkcity or #breakingnews. When a user clicks on a hashtag, it goes directly to a search for its most recent mentions, providing an easy way to find and follow users interested in the same topics.
-
7
Include "@mentions" in your tweets by typing the "at" symbol, followed by a Twitter user name; for example: @yourusername. The tweet then shows up in the other user's timeline so that user knows you are speaking to or mentioning him or her.
