How to Do 1960s Hairstyles

How to Do 1960s Hairstyles thumbnail
1960s hairstyles are still popular today.

The 1960s was a decade of change, which was reflected in the evolving hairstyles of the time. Early 1960s hair still had the formality and polished finish of 1950s styles. As the decade drew to a close, more natural, hippie styles took over. One popular special-occasion look was the up-do. The bouffant, also known as the beehive, was a popular hairstyle for much of the 1960s as well, and one that really made a statement. The bouffant is a versatile 'do that works with or without thick bangs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. 1960s Up-Do

    • 1

Divide your hair into three sections at the back of your head. Wind the top layer of your hair backward, away from your face, with 2-inch rollers.

    • 2

Separate the rest of your hair into four sections. Wind each section around a roller, away from your face. Spray hairspray over your entire head and leave your rollers in for as long as possible to ensure your hair is set.

    • 3

Remove rollers and use your fingers to separate your hair slightly. Gather your hair in both hands and secure it in a loose ponytail at the back of your crown with a snag-free elastic. Divide your ponytail into three or four sections. Create a loop with each section and pin it in place with bobby pins.

    • 4

Pin a hair piece, in the same color as yours, at the back of your crown, over your own hair -- unless you have plenty of long, thick hair of your own. Backcomb the hair around the top to give added height.

    1960s Bouffant

    • 5

Wash your hair with volumizing shampoo and conditioner.

    • 6

Towel-dry and comb your hair. Apply a volumizing mousse or spray gel through the entire length of your hair, concentrating most of it at the roots.

    • 7

Turn your head upside down and blow dry your hair in that position. Use the nozzle on your dryer to achieve maximum body.

    • 8

Stand or sit in front of a mirror. Divide your hair into 1-inch sections. Start at the front of your hair and wind each section around a jumbo Velcro roller. Wind the hair away from your face, toward the back of your head. Carry on around to the back of your hair.

    • 9

Spray hairspray liberally over your entire head and leave your rollers in for as long as possible, to really set the curls.

    • 10

Remove the rollers and work your fingers gently through your hair to separate the curls slightly.

    • 11

Lift the uppermost section of your hair and secure it with a snag-free elastic. Lift a section of hair from underneath this top section, holding it up with one hand. Use the other hand to comb it down in short, fast strokes. Continue backcombing around the back of the crown to create height.

    • 12

Remove the elastic and let the top layer of hair fall down over the backcombed hair. Use your fingers to smooth it slightly, comb it back from your face and give it a final application of hairspray to hold it in place.
