-
Step 1
Send Valentines to all the people on your Christmas card list. Everyone enjoys a jolt of cheer in the middle of dreary February.
-
Step 2
Show up at a children's hospital with a load of toys, books and games.
-
Step 3
Take flowers and candy to strangers in a nursing home or hospice.
-
Step 4
Gather up the towels, sheets, blankets and bathmats you no longer use - or buy some new ones - and take them to an animal shelter or veterinary hospital. (The staff and the critters will love you forever.)
-
Step 5
Think of someone you know who's been in the doldrums lately and leave a secret care package on his or her doorstep. Something as simple as a bottle of wine or a bunch of flowers from the supermarket can turn someone's whole day around.
-
Step 6
Scatter a packet of Heavenly Blue morning glory seeds beside a rusty chain-link fence in a vacant lot.
-
Step 7
Go for a long walk on the beach, trash bags in hand, and pick up litter.
-
Step 8
Be your own Valentine: Buy yourself that painting or dress or coffee-table book you can't get out of your mind. Take yourself to dinner at your favorite restaurant, or have the meal delivered. Take the day off work and spend it doing whatever you like to do most ' even if it's absolutely nothing.

on 2/9/2009 I love the idea about sending Valentines to the folks on my holiday card list! Last year I did the idea of taking my old sheets, towels and blankets to the local animal shelter. I live in a small, rural community, and the local SPCA (and the animals!) were delighted, as most of my old blankets were old comforters.

on 2/1/2009 Love the idea of Valentine's day being about love- not necessarily a lover!
