How to Score Points in Curling

The winning curling team gets their stones the closest to the button.

The winter sport of curling involves ice rinks and 42-lb. stones sliding along the ice toward the "house" and the "button" in the center of the house. According to the Potomac Curling Club, four-person teams compete against each other to slide their stones as close to the button bulls-eye as possible. A curling game may involve eight or 10 "ends" -- the term for the divisions in a curling game. Score points in curling after each end, by examining the ending position of each stone in the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete the stone throwing for an end. Each team slides eight stones with each member taking two turns to slide a stone. The teams alternate turns with each other. The object of the game is to make the stones end up closer to the button than the opposing team.

    • 2

Examine the stones that stopped in the house after an end finishes. Typically, the "thirds" on each team examine the placement of the stones to determine scoring ("thirds" are the team members that occupy the third throwing position).

    • 3

Determine which team had stones that stopped closest to the center of the button. This team earns points for the end. Only one team can earn points in an end because points accrue only for the team that threw their stones the most accurately.

    • 4

Award one point for each stone that stopped closer to the button than the opposing team. For example, if a team had three stones closer to the button than the opposing team, this team earns three points for that end.

    • 5

Add up the points for each end at the end of the game. The team with the highest total points wins the curling game.

Tips & Warnings

  • A standard curling game has eight ends and a competition curling game has 10 ends.
