Using dark chocolate is a nice twist on standard hot cocoa.

Hot chocolate is a delightful drink enjoyed by many cultures. The recipes are usually quite different, varying from spiced blends to adding a dollop of mascarpone cheese. Hot cocoa differs from hot chocolate in that it uses cocoa powder in place of milk chocolate. Using dark chocolate which has a much higher cocoa content than milk chocolate is a cross between the two and it's a simple task to make it in your own kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • 6 oz. dark chocolate
  • Whisk
  • Pot
  • Sugar to taste
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

      Place the cutting board onto the counter. Use the knife to finely chop 6 oz. of dark chocolate on the cutting board.

      Place the pot on the stove and turn it to medium heat. Add the 2 cups of milk and the finely chopped dark chocolate.

      Use the whisk to stir the milk and dark chocolate mixture until it has reached a foamy and even consistency. Add sugar to taste if desired.

      Pour the dark hot cocoa slowly so as not to destroy the foam. Add a dollop of whipped cream for a richer-tasting mug of cocoa.

      Place the pot in the sink and add hot water to prevent a difficult clean up afterward.

Tips & Warnings

  • The higher the cocoa content, the darker the chocolate. Start with 70 percent cocoa.
