Directions to Create an Updo

Whether you have naturally curly locks or your medium-length strands are bone straight, you can easily twist and coil your hair into a chic and sophisticated updo. Things You'll Need
- Hairspray
- Rattail comb
- Elastic hair bands
- Flat brush
- Long bobby pins
- Small U-shaped hairpins
- 1 ½- or 2-inch curling iron
- Pomade

Spray dry hair with hairspray to add texture. Rake through hair using your fingers to distribute the product evenly from the roots to the tips.

Tease the hair at the crown of your head, using a rattail comb, to provide lift (height). Smooth the surface of the teased portion with a flat brush.

Gather hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck using your fingers. Secure the ponytail with an elastic band.

Twist the tail up toward the crown of your head to create a messy French twist. Secure it with long bobby pins. If you prefer a sleek chignon, wrap the ponytail around the elastic band to create a small bun shape, then slide three or four short, U-shaped hairpins into the chignon to secure.

Pull out a few strands of hair around your ears and hairline to create sexy wisps or soft tendrils. Wrap these strands around a 1 ½- or 2-inch curling iron to add large curls to your tendrils. Add a few squirts of medium-hold hairspray to finish the look.

Tips & Warnings
For a more relaxed updo, curl hair all over your head using a 1½- to 2-inch curling iron to create a slightly tousled effect for the updo.
Smooth and flatten flyways by adding a pea-size amount of pomade to your hairline with your fingertips.
