Completely decorating your living or family room includes addressing the space above your couch. A sofa is typically one of the largest pieces in a room and naturally draws the eyes. Use the space above your couch to enhance the room's decor or serve as the main idea in your decorating scheme by establishing the style, color scheme or theme.
Hang decorative fabric, drapes or curtains behind the couch to cover a window. Use a decorative curtain rod and finials, along with a fabric that complements the sofa fabric. Solid panels will look best behind a patterned sofa, whereas patterns or solids work with a solid-colored sofa.
Install floating shelves to display interesting artifacts, vases, floral arrangements, candles or other pieces. Alternatively, mix the objects with mirrors, artwork or pictures that sit on the shelf and lean against the wall. For example, a taller piece of artwork can lean against the wall on the left side of the shelf, with a shorter, but wider piece of artwork sitting in front of it, partially covering the first piece. Large vases or pottery can sit on the right side with various pieces in the center. Use low pieces in the center if you plan to hang a picture or mirror above the shelf arrangement. Stagger shelves to hold smaller pieces for a larger visual display.
Display a single mirror or piece of art above the sofa if it's large enough or interesting enough to fill up the space on its own. The piece should be wider than half the length of the sofa, or it should be combined with another piece or group of pieces. Alternatively, two smaller objects, such as wall sconces or ironwork, can flank a large mirror or piece of art.
Create an interesting display of pictures or artwork if you want to create a focal point or decorate with smaller pieces. The pieces can hang side-by-side, in a straight line, on top of each other, staggered or any combination that works with your style. For example, hang 14 pictures of the same size with five in the top row, four in the center and five on the bottom staggered like a checker board. All the pieces should relate to each other, such as by using all black-and-white prints, a series of photos or artwork that incorporates the same basic colors or subjects, such as floral prints.
Center the arrangement with the largest piece in the center if you're arranging the pieces somewhat randomly where they don't result in straight lines.
Tips & Warnings
- Your decorations should complement your couch. For example, add floral-patterned throw pillows to a plain white sofa to work with the flower prints hanging above the couch. A modern piece of art with orange and white would likely clash with a turquoise sofa.
- Use the proper hardware to hang your decorative items and make sure the items aren't too heavy to hang on the wall to avoid falling items that can break or injure someone.
