How to Prove Your Address

How to Prove Your Address thumbnail
Your most recent utility bill is proof of your address.

Certain circumstances and instances require you to provide proof of your residency by proving your address, such as applying for a driver license or state identification card. To prove your address you need to provide appropriate documentation that states both your name and your current address. Many documents provide this information; acceptable proof of residency documents are universal, meaning no matter which state you are in or what agency you are proving your address to, you can use the same documents.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the person or agency to whom you must prove your address how many documents are needed to provide proof. This type of identification is often referred to as secondary identification and some agencies require you provide at least two forms of proof of residency.

    • 2

Provide your photo identification, such as your license, state identification card, passport or naturalization certificate to the agency. Documents that prove your address or residency show your name and address but the agency must confirm that the name on these documents matches the name on your photo identification.

    • 3

Provide proof of your address using the correct documents. Acceptable documents include tax statements, lease agreements, mortgage statements, utility bills, vehicle registration, voter registration, bank statements, employment check stubs, W2s and income tax returns. All forms must be current; most agencies require that the document is between one and three months of age. Income tax returns and W2s must be from the most recent tax year.
