How to Uninstall Windows Vista From a Toshiba Laptop & Replace it With Windows XP

Certain Toshiba laptop models come with Windows Vista, but have drivers compatible with earlier operating systems such as Windows XP. If you prefer Windows XP or are not interested in Windows Vista features, you can use the Windows XP installation disc to format your Windows Vista hard drive and clean it off of the system. After the drive is cleaned, you can install Windows XP and use it as the primary hard drive on the Toshiba laptop.

Create a backup of any personal data you need to save from the Toshiba laptop. All data on the Vista drive is deleted through the format process, so you need to back this information up before you start the installation.

Put the Windows XP disc into the Toshiba's optical drive. Restart the laptop.

    • 3

Press a key to boot into the CD.

Press "Enter" to access the Windows XP installer. Press "F8" to agree to Microsoft's license. Select the hard drive partition containing Windows Vista. Press "D" to begin the deletion process of that partition. Press "L" to confirm that you do want to delete the partition and all of its contents. Press "C" to create a new partition and "Enter" to confirm the size. You can adjust the size before creating the partition, if needed. Press "Enter" to continue with the installation.

Select your format option. You can select NTFS or FAT32. In most cases, NTFS is the better choice as it provides higher performance and stability. Press "Enter" and wait for the disc to format. The Windows installer copies all installation files and restarts your computer to begin the graphical installation.
