The right paddle makes kayaking more fun.

Everyone knows it's bad to be up the creek without a paddle, but it's also ill advised to have a paddle that isn't the right size for you. Kayaking with a correctly sized paddle will make participating in the sport easier and more enjoyable. There may be times when you want a longer or shorter paddle. For the most part, though, you can find the proper size paddle using a basic technique that takes very little time and effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the kayak paddle on its side so it is vertical, with the tip of one of the blades touching the ground.

    • 2

Raise one hand over your head as far as you can. Keep your feet flat on the ground.

    • 3

Wrap your fingers around the paddle blade above your head if possible. If you cannot reach your fingers around the paddle blade, it is too big. If you can wrap your whole hand around it, it is too small. If you can wrap just your fingers around it, you have found the proper size paddle for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are some conditions where you might want a longer or shorter paddle. For short, speedy trips a smaller paddle will allow you use a more vertical stroke. This will move you more quickly through the water. A shorter paddle is also useful in choppy water, where you will need to have more stopping and turning ability.

  • If you want to move more slowly and leisurely through calm waters, go with a longer paddle. It will allow you to make easy, shallow stroking motions.

  • It's best to use a kayak paddle that is able to float in case you lose your grip. This is especially true for those who are new to kayaking, and anyone who is unable to swim.

  • You should wear a life preserver when you go kayaking in case you fall out of the boat.
