How to Clear Away Kitten Tears

How to Clear Away Kitten Tears thumbnail
A kitten's eyes should be clear, with no colored discharge.

Kittens have large, expressive eyes that are one of their major sources of appeal for many people. Unfortunately, some health problems can cause excessive tearing. Kittens can get colds just like people, and when they do, their eyes and noses often start running. You can make your kitten more comfortable by removing the tears. Excessive tears can also be caused by eye irritations and a host of other health problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour some warm water into a bowl.

    • 2

Sit down and hold the kitten next to your chest. Hold the kitten so its body is pressed between your arm and body.

    • 3

Grasp the kitten's head with the same hand to hold it still.

    • 4

Hold the baby toothbrush in the opposite hand. Dip the toothbrush in the bowl of water to moisten it.

    • 5

Remove dried tears from the kitten's eyes by brushing the moistened toothbrush in the direction of the hair.

    • 6

Moisten the washcloth in the bowl of water, and hold it so a small amount of fabric protrudes between your thumb and forefinger.

    • 7

Wipe away any wet tears with the washcloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the kitten is especially squirmy, you may need an assistant to hold it.

  • If the kitten's eyes water excessively, or the tears are colored, contact your veterinarian immediately. Colored discharge from the eyes is a sign of health problems.
