1
Paint the bookshelf, if the shelf is plain wood. Let your teen select the color and use stencils to create designs on the outside of the bookcase. Alternately, Real Simple recommends decorating the interior walls of the bookshelf by painting, applying wallpaper, fabric or even wrapping paper.

2
Place the books that you do want on the shelves sporadically on different shelves. Stand some books up and lay some books down for a haphazard appearance.

3
Select a theme for each shelf. Use books in certain subjects and outfit the rest of the shelf with other items to fill in the theme. For instance, if your teen is interested in sports, place the sports books on one shelf and place collectibles, like baseballs or sports cards on stands next to the sports book collection.

4
Decorate with items from your teen's school experience. Place yearbooks, trophies, awards and framed photos of school friends on one shelf or use throughout the overall design.
-
5
Leave space for items that your teen uses regularly, such as his or her camera, cell phone, keys and other important items on easy-to-reach shelves. This gives your teen a spot to keep everything organized and makes items easy to grab on the way out of the room.
