How to Volunteer After 50 Years Old in the Peace Corps

How to Volunteer After 50 Years Old in the Peace Corps thumbnail
You can still volunteer with the Peace Corps after you turn 50.

According to the Peace Corps's website, there is no maximum age beyond which a candidate cannot become a volunteer. Age-wise, volunteers must simply be 18 years of age or older. Indeed, there are multiple areas a volunteer who is over 50 could become a part of. These areas include education, youth and community development, health, business and information, communication technology, agriculture and the environment. A volunteer who is over 50 should choose an area which he or she is personally interested in; doing so will make the Peace Corps experience even more exciting and fulfilling.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Peace Corps's website (www.peacecorps.gov) to choose which area you are most interested in. Most broad areas of interest offer specific sub-areas which are explained in greater detail on the website. View the sub-areas and choose the one you are most interested in.

    • 2

Read the required qualifications for the sub-area you would like to volunteer for. Make sure that you meet all of the position's stated requirements.

    • 3

Click on "Start You Application Process" on the far right side of the Peace Corps's home page. You will need to provide personal information about yourself in the application including, but not limited to, your Social Security number, three references, educational background, any prior volunteer experience, a written motivational statement, a written cross-cultural experience essay, work experience/resume and financial obligations.

    • 4

Complete and submit your application. About two weeks after your application has been submitted, the Peace Corps will contact you for an interview -- assuming you are eligible.

    • 5

Receive your nomination after all of your documents have been submitted, your interview has been completed and you've been hired by the Peace Corps.

    • 6

Complete a health screening. The Peace Corps needs to check many different areas of your health. Take note that some of the costs related to this process need to be covered by the applicant.

    • 7

Accept your invitation to serve as a volunteer in the Peace Corps. You will be provided with information on your assigned position and location, as well as general orientation details. Invitations are generally sent to volunteers two to three months before their project begins.

    • 8

Prepare to travel to your destination. The Peace Corps will send you all necessary background information, including an electronic ticket for air travel.

Tips & Warnings

  • For older volunteers who are married, the Peace Corps offers opportunities for couples to travel and volunteer together.

  • If you do not meet the requirements of your top choice for volunteering, consider a second choice or contact the Peace Corps directly to find an area that is right for you.

  • If you have any questions, contact a Peace Corps recruiter.
