How to Send Ringtones on the iPhone

The iPhone comes with a number of standard ring tones, and through iTunes you can buy additional ones directly from the iPhone. You can also make your own ring tones from segments of MP3s you already own. While this process is somewhat involved, you can make whatever ring tones you want to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the MP3 file you want to use as your ring tone in iTunes, and move it to the "Ringtones" folder. Right-click on the MP3 file, and select "Create AAC Version" from the context sensitive menu. This creates a copy of the MP3 as an AAC audio file. The AAC audio file has an extension of *.mp4.

    • 2

Copy the newly made *.mp4 file to your desktop, and then right click the file. Rename it whatever you want, and change the extension to *.m4r.

    • 3

Click "Yes" on the dialog that comes up, asking if you're sure you want to do this.

    • 4

Delete the original *.m4a file from within iTunes, and drag the *.m4r file from your desktop to the "Ringtones" folder in iTunes.

    • 5

Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable, and synchronize your iPhone with iTunes. This copies the new ring tone you made to the iPhone.

    • 6

Undock the iPhone. Tap on the iPhone "Settings" app, and then tap on the "Sounds" icon. In the menu that comes up, tap on the "Ringtones" listing. You should see your new ring tone in the custom area at the top of the screen.
