How to Remove the Top of a 49 Print Cartridge to Refill It
The HP 49 is a color inkjet cartridge that is utilized in several of HP's home desktop printer models. In order to refill this cartridge from home, you will need to first remove the plastic covering on the top of the cartridge. Once the top is removed, you can access the refilling holes and inject replacement ink into the empty HP 49. Carefully wedge the thin metal blade into the space where the plastic top meets the body of the cartridge.

Hold the cartridge firmly in one hand while pushing down on the end of the blade to pry up the cap. Move the blade and reposition it around the cap to help pry it off evenly.

Hold the cartridge onto the edge of a flat surface so that the cap is hanging off the side if you do not have a blade to wedge under the cap.

Strike down onto the cap with a blunt object to break the seal between the cap and cartridge and remove the cap successfully.
