How to Find an Entry Level Marketing Job thumbnail
There are entry level positions in many companies and industries.

Marketing can be a tough field to break into. Top agencies and in-house marketing departments are often flooded with a range of applicants from which to choose. Often, your competition will be other people with years of industry experience. How can you make yourself stand out? How do you get your foot in the door? How do you start building contacts in an industry where you might not know anyone today? The key lies in just getting whatever industry experience you can, as quickly as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify what kind of marketing you want to do. There's television marketing, online marketing, radio advertising, market research, direct response advertising, affiliate program management and many more job specialties. Just saying you want to get into "marketing" is not enough. Choose something more specific that you want to do.

Look through your LinkedIn, Facebook, email and phone contacts for anyone who is connected to a company that might hire someone like you. Also, contact people who are likely to know others who might hire someone like you. Finding employment through personal contacts helps you get into companies with a bit of prebuilt trust.

    • 3

Identify three to five companies you want to work for. Contact these companies directly and either submit your resume in person or call and try to talk to the head of the department you want to work for. Be persistent and let them know you really want to work there. Let them know what sets you apart from the others and why they should hire you.

Look on job search sites like Craigslist and Monster for entry level positions. Submit your resume, then follow up incessantly. Jobs posted on job sites often get dozens, sometimes hundreds of applicants. It is crucial that you keep contacting potential employers until you receive a solid response.

Contact several temp agencies and submit your resume. Tell them you are interested in any job that is related to marketing and that you will only take jobs related to marketing. Although the pay from temp agencies is usually low, you will receive the chance to get industry experience and make some contacts.
