How to Fix Word Document Files
Word is Microsoft's word processing software and part of the Microsoft Office suite. It has been around since the days when it ran under the DOS operating system. These days, however, it has a wide range of capabilities, from helping you write a simple letter to low-end desktop publishing. As with any software, sometimes problems occur that corrupt files, leaving them unreadable. This can be irritating, but can sometimes cause serious problems. Fortunately, there is a simple solution.

Start Word and click on the "File" menu, and then "Open."

Navigate to the file you wish to open, then just highlight it by single-clicking on it. Do not double-click it or Word will attempt to open it and you will just get the error message again.

Look down to the right side of the "File Name" field at the bottom of the window. At its right side there is a button labelled, "Open" and this has a small down arrow on its right side.

Click the down arrow and select "Open and Repair" from the list displayed. Word will repair the corrupted document and display it for you.

Tips & Warnings
Ensure that you have "Autosave" set for your Word documents. Set the autosave time to a period where the loss of that much work would be tolerable.
Ensure that you always save your documents before switching off your computer. This is a frequent cause of corrupted documents.
If your documents are crucial, you may wish to invest in an uninterruptible power supply.
