How to Write Objectives in Papers

It does not matter what type of paper you are writing, you are probably going to need an objective. Objectives are the first paragraphs of papers, and they let the reader know what lies ahead. You will find objectives in research papers, book reports, term papers and even resumes. Objectives also work to draw in readers, so it is important they are not only informational, but also interesting. Your objective should make your reader want to keep going.

  • Keep your objective short, usually no more than a paragraph.

  • Explain your reason for writing the paper, essay or resume, and why you think this it is important.

  • Summarize your paper. Do not get into any detail or repeat things stated in your paper.

  • State what you hope to accomplish by the end of the paper or by writing the paper, as well as how you will accomplish it.

  • State your conclusion.
