How to Add Filters to AdBlock Plus

Save

AdBlock Plus, a browser extension for the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers, enables Internet users to block banner and display advertising on websites. Although the application can block most ads without modification, adding filters can customize ad blocking based on frequently-visited websites and user experience.

  • Download AdBlock Plus (see Resources) and allow it to install in your browser.

  • Choose a filter subscription by pressing "Ctrl," "Shift" and "e" simultaneously and entering the preferences menu. Select a subscription based on the description that best fits your browsing patterns.

  • Customize AdBlock Plus as you browse to block ads that slip through. Click on the arrow next to the "ABP" icon in the top-left corner of your browser window and select "Open blockable items." This will open a window listing all of the blockable items on that page.

  • Sort the items by type and identify the item that needs to be blocked. Right-click on this item and, in the contextual menu that opens, click on "Block this item." This will open a window allowing you to define the blocking rule. Choose to block the specific item or add wild cards (the asterisk) to block an entire folder (such as the ads folder) or an entire domain (such as yahoo.com). Click on "add filter" to block the items that you've chosen.
