How to Get Your UPromise Points
Student loans and thoughts of paying for college are often a heavy weight on many Americans' shoulders. One program aims to help lift the burden by rewarding people who shop online or register a credit card. Upromise rewards shoppers who create an account and log into their Upromise account before making online purchases. It also rewards members who register credit and debit cards and use them at participating restaurants, grocery and drug stores. The money earned is used to pay off Sallie Mae student loans, save for college or pay school expenses.

Create a Upromise account. Visit the Upromise website and enter your first and last name, as well as your email address where directed. Click "Get Started Now." A new page will appear.

Type a username, password, your name, mailing address, email address and phone number in the boxes where directed. Select and answer a security section and if you are currently in college or not. Type the security verification and press "Enter."

Click on the "Invite Friends and Family" link found on the left side of your computer screen. Type email addresses where directed. Upromise will send emails containing your information to these people, informing them of ways they can help you earn money for college.

Register your credit or debit card. Select the card type, such as MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express. Type the credit card number, expiration date, name on card and billing address. Click "Register." Repeat the process on all the cards you wan to use to earn Upromise rewards.

Begin shopping while logged into your Upromise account. Click on the name of the store you wish to visit. Make a purchase at the store and you've earned Upromise rewards. There are different reward percentages at various stores. Some stores may offer three percent back on every dollar you spend, while others may offer 20 percent on each dollar. When Upromise has verified the purchase, it will place the rewards into your Upromise account. It generally takes between 30 to 90 days before the rewards post to an account.

Request the rewards money be placed into a 529 account to save for college, be sent to Sallie Mae to pay an existing loan or to have a check mailed to you to pay school expenses. You must accumulate $25 before you can use the Upromise rewards money.
