How to Hang a Very Large World Map

Very large world maps provide a focal point in a classroom and a visual reference when teaching history and geography. Getting a very large world map on the wall however, can prove difficult especially if it does not have a frame. The map must hang where the center is at eye level in order for viewers to easily see the entire map. Keeping the map hung helps prevent damage, such as wrinkles and tears.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and height of the world map and the wall space designated for the map. The wall where the map hangs must also have the same amount of free space as the measurements of the map.

    • 2

Mount the world map on a purchased mounting, following the manufacturer's directions. Mounting the wall map is only necessary if the map does not have a hanging mechanism.

    • 3

Install a heavy picture hook on the wall. Screw a sheet rock anchor into the wall before screwing the hook into the anchor.

    • 4

Hang the map on the hook by the wire or twine used in the hanging mechanism. If the wall map has multiple grommets instead of a wire, measure the distance between the grommets. Install more hooks the same distance apart as the grommets. Place the grommets on the hooks, one at a time, until the map hangs completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Two people working together make hanging a wall map a quick and easy job.
