Saris of any length can be worn daily or for special occasions.

A sari is the traditional dress of Indian women that is worn draped across the body. The fabrics vary from silk to less expensive materials, and the color choices and patterns are endless. The Nivi style is the most common way to wear a sari, also spelled saree. With practice, a sari can be put on quickly and correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a blouse and petticoat to achieve the Nivi style sari. The petticoat should start at the waist and end at floor level and the blouse should be snug and end just under the bust.

    • 2

Tuck the plain end of the sari into the petticoat, and wrap once around your waist from right to left, ending at the starting point. Make sure the sari is touching the floor.

    • 3

Make pleats about five inches wide starting from the end. Tuck into the petticoat until you have seven to 10 pleats. Ensure these are even and straight, and then tuck into the petticoat slightly to the left of your navel. Make sure the pleats face left.

    • 4

Wrap the sari around yourself one more time, from right to left. The sari should still touch the floor.

    • 5

Drape the decorative end, or pallav, over your left shoulder. Leave it loose or pin the sari with a safety pin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pin the sari with a decorative brooch for personal flair.
