How to Design a Garden With a Fountain
A fountain is the focal point of your garden. Generally, no matter what you plant in your yard, the fountain will stand out from the surrounding shrubs and flowers. In order to arrange plant life in a garden with a fountain, the plants need to be placed in a circle or square surrounding it. There are several factors involved in designing a garden with a fountain, including the placement of the water lines, deciding which plants will go around the fountain and, most importantly, choosing the fountain. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose the location for the fountain. Water lines need to be run underground to the fountain in order to have it work properly. The fountain needs to be placed in a flat, level area of your yard that has enough space for the concrete pad that it sits on. The size of the pad depends on the design of the particular fountain, but a good estimate is to make it double the diameter of the fountain's base.

2
Determine which fountain design to put in your yard. Fountains come in materials ranging from concrete to stone, and are available in many colors, including natural stone shades like gray and brown. You need to decide how many spouts there will be, how large a pool the fountain will have and the overall design aesthetic. A modern-style fountain consists of rounded edges and soft lines, while a classical one has curlicues and ridges. Fountain designs can also contain statues of angels, wildlife and fish.

Select your plants. Since the fountain is the center of attention, any plants that you choose will need to enhance it. Keep the overall height of the fountain in mind, and do not pick any plants that will grow to be larger or taller than the fountain, since they will only overwhelm it. Decide which plants to use based on the design of the fountain: simple plants, such as shrubbery, will look best with a modern fountain, while flowers like roses and hyacinths will go well with a classic-style fountain.

4
Sketch out a diagram of your yard with the fountain drawn in the desired location. Plot out where the plants will go, and lightly pencil them in around the fountain. They do not have to be detailed -- basic circles that are color-coded will work just as well as detailed renderings of the plants. Go with the basic lines of the fountain. An angular-shaped fountain requires plants that are placed in rows around it, and a circular fountain looks best with plants arranged to mimic its curves.
