How to Check the VIN in a Camaro
All vehicles manufactured are assigned a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is submitted to the Department of Transportation. Checking the VIN on a Camaro is a two-fold process that involves finding its location, and then translating the numbers and letters that make up the VIN. The VIN will give you information about the production of the Camaro, as well as previous damage that may have been done and previous owners, and also can help you determine the value of the Camaro.
Instructions

1
Look at the dashboard on the driver side of the Camaro. Locate the VIN number plate near the windshield.
-
2
Record the VIN on a note card or sheet of paper using a pen or pencil. It is essential to make sure you record the VIN correctly to get the right information for your Camaro.
-
-
3
Examine the first character of the VIN. This first number or letter will tell you what country your Camaro was built in. If the vehicle was produced in the United States, the first character will be a "1" or "4."
-
4
Examine the second character in the VIN sequence, which will give you information regarding the manufacturer or model of the Camaro. For example, if your Camaro was manufactured any time from 1981 until the present, the character should be a "G" for "General Motors." An older Camaro built between 1972 and 1979 will have a "Q" for "Sports Coupe."
-
5
Look at the third VIN character. This character represents the manufacturing division. A currently made Camaro will have a "1" for this character, indicating "Chevrolet."
-
6
Examine the fourth through eighth characters of the VIN number. This sequence of characters identifies the body style (fourth character), "Camaro" vehicle make (fifth character), body style (sixth character) such as a two-door hatchback, type of restraint system (seventh character) and type of engine in the vehicle (eighth character).
-
7
Look at the ninth and tenth characters of the VIN number. The ninth VIN character is used to gather information about the original owner of the vehicle and is called the check digit, while the tenth determines the model year.
-
8
Examine the 11th through 17th characters of the VIN. Character 11 will tell you what plant manufactured your vehicle. Characters 12 through 17 were used to differentiate your Camaro from other automobiles that were produced at the manufacturing plant at the same time the Camaro was built.
