How to Determine Banjo Pick Size
Before you buy a thumb pick for your banjo you will need to determine the proper size. Unlike a regular pick that you grip in between your thumb and forefinger during play, a thumb pick fits around the girth of your thumb. This means that you have to properly measure your thumb in order to determine the size pick you need to buy. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Wrap your flexible tape measure around the top portion of your thumb that contains your thumbnail. Read the measurement to find out the width, in centimeters, of your thumb.
-
2
Take the measurement of your thumb one more time. Thumb picks for banjos and guitars are very rarely adjustable, so its important that you take this measurement more than once to check your findings. You want to make sure you're measuring your thumb properly and reading the tape measure correctly so that you can purchase the appropriate thumb pick.

Consult the sizing chart for the specific brand of thumb pick you're going to buy to find out the size you need. Just like with clothing, certain manufacturers size their products in different ways. For example, if your thumb measured four centimeters that means you need a Geipel/Gewa size 0 thumb pick for your banjo. However, some other manufacturers do not have a size 0 and may instead list that as a size 1.
