How to Remove a Fish Hook From a Fish's Throat
When fishermen set the hook on a fish, their goal is to make the point of the hook penetrate the side of the fish's mouth. This keeps the fish hooked, but also makes hook removal easy. However, fish sometimes begin swallowing before the fisherman can set the hook. When this occurs, the hook penetrates the fish in its throat or further into its body, making removal difficult. At that point, fishermen have a couple of choices.

1
Hold the fish so you can see clearly into its throat. If you have a fish like a bass or crappie, hold it by its lower jaw. Otherwise, hold it in back of its head.

2
Stick your pliers into the fish's mouth and grab the hook. Press down lightly on the pliers and pull toward the middle of the fish's throat. If the hook comes out, carefully remove it from the fish's mouth.

Cut the line just above the hook if the hook does not come out. Wrenching on the hook, or forcing it out, can kill the fish. If it does not come out easily, the best bet is to leave it there and allow the fish to work it out naturally.
