Instructions

  1. Drawing the Colt 45

    • 1

Place your hand near the grip of a holstered Colt .45-caliber revolver as it sits on your preferred side. Depending on the rules of the shooting event in which you are participating, you will hear a buzzer or some other cue indicating when you should draw the Colt from its holster.

    • 2

Cock the hammer with the thumb before the Colt 45 is drawn from the holster. This technique is called thumbing. This is when the Colt is cocked before the weapon leaves the holster.

    • 3

Pull the weapon from the holster with one, smooth upward movement and fire from just over the top of the holster. Initially when you are practicing this technique do not worry about speed. Instead, concentrate on drawing the weapon from its holster in a smooth manner and the speed will come with practice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always practice safe firearms handling techniques.

  • Never practice fast-draw techniques with a loaded weapon.

  • This technique is mainly utilized in cowboy action or other sanctioned shooting events and is usually employed using wax bullets. It should not be attempted by novices using real bullets.
