How to File a Thief Report With the Memphis Police Department
Filing a report of theft, burglary or fraud with the Memphis Police Department is handled by the Crimes by Property division. The process is designed to be straightforward and non-intimidating and to ultimately catch the criminal. If you are the victim of a property theft and want to file a report in Memphis, follow the department's recommended process. If your house or auto has been broken into, try not to disturb the scene, because you may destroy valuable clues the detectives need.

Wait for an officer to arrive on scene. The officer will ask questions regarding the event, the estimated value of the stolen property, and any possible suspects. The officer will search the area and look for any clues.

Write down your statement on the papers the officer provides. Stick to the facts as you remember them, and try to keep emotion out of the report. Ask for copies of all documents you sign. Get the officer's name and badge ID. Follow up with this information if you do not hear anything after a week.
