How to Convert AVIs to Play on an iPod
The iPod does not support playback for every type of video file. If you have one of your videos in the .AVI format, you must first convert it to MP4 so it can be played by the iPod's software. Open the "iTunes" application from the "All Programs" folder in the "Start" menu or by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop.

Click the "File" button on the menu bar and click "Add To Library." Browse to the AVI file in the dialog that appears and click the file's name. Click "Open" to add the file to iTunes.

Click the AVI file's entry in your iTunes library and click the "Advanced" button on the menu bar. Click the "Create iPod Version" option in the drop-down menu, and iTunes will automatically create an iPod friendly copy of the AVI file.
