How to Use a 2010 Document Map in Word

Microsoft Word 2010 gives you multiple ways to view documents. The Navigation pane (formerly known as the Document Map in earlier versions) shows you the structure of your document. It's visible in Print Layout view on the left side of your page and displays bold text and headings automatically. The Navigation pane is a time-saving tool for long documents. It helps you jump to a specific area more quickly without bookmarks so you can view or modify it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Word document you want to view.

    • 2

Highlight any text that you want to turn into headings so you can jump in the navigation. Click the "Home" tab and select a heading style in the "Styles" group. The selection is converted into a heading.

    • 3

Click the "View" tab. In the "Document Views" group, select "Print Layout."

    • 4

On the "View" tab, in the "Show" group, select the "Navigation Pane" check box. The Navigation Pane opens on the left.

    • 5

Click any headings you want to view. When you click headings in the pane, you jump to that section of your page.
