A wide variety of themes are available when creating a slide show or presentation using Microsoft's PowerPoint program. You can use themes that are pre-installed, download additional ones from the Microsoft website or create your own using colors or images. When you are working on a presentation and decide that a change is needed, you can change the background on your slides by following a few steps.
Click the "Design" tab and locate the "Background" section. Click the "Hide Background Graphics" option. This will clear the current background, but any text or slide images will remain.
Click the "Background Styles" drop-down menu. You may select a pre-formatted background from the list of available options, or you may select your own. Click any pre-formatted option to add it as a background. To create your own background, go to step 3.
Select the "Format Background" option from the "Background Styles" drop-down menu. This action will launch the "Format Background" dialogue window. Use the "Solid Fill" option to use a specific color, which may be selected from the "Color" drop-down menu under the "Fill Color" section. Use the "Picture" option to use an image file as your background, and select the file using the "File," "Clipboard" or "Clip Art," as appropriate.
Click the "Reset Background" button to apply the background to the current slide. Click the "Apply to All" button to apply the background to all slides in the presentation.
